I know a lot of women have different opinions on boyfriend vs husband privileges. And that is why it is such a controversial discussion.

Now, before you get up all in my face, remember that there is no right or wrong when it comes to how you want to treat your boyfriend. As they say, to each, his/her own.

Some women are of the opinion that when a man is your boyfriend, he should enjoy the privileges that come with having you as their woman. Others, not so much.

While my opinion may be that you should go with how your heart feels, a lot of other women feel differently.

Before making rash decisions on where the line should be drawn between boyfriend and husband privileges, let’s take a look at some of the common causes of conflict.

Sex

When a man is married to a woman, they both enjoy unlimited sex. I mean, that is what all of us were taught as we grew up.

However, times have changed. Sex has now become readily available. It is, therefore, a huge defining factor for most relationships. Without it, most people don’t consider a relationship stable.

Sex has now become a defining factor for most relationships

This is one of the most controversial topics when it comes to drawing the line between boyfriend and husband privileges.

Some are of the opinion that they should deny their boyfriends sex. Others say that while you decide to have sex with your boyfriend, always use protection in the form of condoms. And under no circumstances should you use contraception for him, unless it is your choice to do so.

Money Responsibilities

One of the most important privileges that a man enjoys when he decides to marry a woman is being able to share financial obligations and responsibilities. Because the whole point of marriage is partnership.

Tip: Ask your boyfriend to put you in all his bank accounts or the beneficiary of his life insurance

When you are married, there is no more his money or my money. With boyfriends, it is so much different.

To briefly explain my point, ask your boyfriend to put you in all his bank accounts or the beneficiary of his life insurance. The most likely reaction to this request will have him looking at you like you are crazy. And that is exactly my point, however, you want to interpret it.

Living Together

It’s not a surprise that most couples these days are shacking up. In fact, one in every 3 couples is living in together before they are married.

Here is my view on shacking up before marriage. If a man is living with a woman and getting some of the “benefits” of marriage – sex, having someone to help around the house, sharing the bills – he tends to get lazy about taking the next step in your relationship.

Think about that.

Major Life Decisions

I’ve heard stories of women who have foregone career opportunities in order to keep their boyfriends happy.

It should be common knowledge that you are the only one who should make decisions about your career.  If he’s asking you not to move out of the country to take that higher paying job, it’s only your opinion that matters, not his.

You are the only one who should make decisions about your life

The point is, you don’t have the security of being married, so he doesn’t get the right to direct important, life changing decisions.

The Takeaway

For the most part, you live and you learn. So don’t be too scared to make mistakes such that you live a less fulfilling life.

But, be careful. Recognize what love really looks like. The bottom line is, protect yourself, value yourself and love yourself enough.
