Reasons Why You Wake Up Tired

Hands up if more often than not you wake up after a night’s sleep still tired! While it might not be unusual to wake up feeling a bit groggy, if you regularly wake up tired, there may be something else going on.

So you might probably be asking yourself what it is that could be causing your lack of energy in the morning. Well, with the busy lives that we lead, it can be a daunting task to pinpoint what exactly may be causing our tiredness.

Nonetheless, what might help is if you take a look at your night routine and compare it to the reasons that I will list in this article. Then from there you can work towards improving your sleeping patterns.

Diet

Your diet actually affects how you sleep. If you eat very gassy foods such as beans and processed foods before going to bed, you will most likely have problems having a good night’s rest. Instead, have a well-balanced diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, proteins, and whole grains to allow you to sleep better and feel great the next day.

Caffeine

In many Kenyan households, it is normal to end the night with a cup of tea. However, this tea contains caffeine which makes it hard to fall and stay asleep. And if you can’t stay asleep for a good 7-8 hours, you will most likely wake up feeling tired the next day.

Therefore, instead of taking coffee or tea in the evening, it’s best to limit your intake to during the day, 7 hours before going to bed.

Quality of mattress

If your morning fatigue is accompanied by stiffness or aching body parts, your mattress could be to blame. It could be that your mattress is too old, worn out and no longer comfortable. If your mattress is older than 8 years, then it could be the reason why you are waking up tired.

Also, a mattress that’s too soft will cause your spine to fall out of alignment all night long, and a mattress that’s too firm will cause joint pressure in your hips that leads to pain in your lower back. Therefore, it’s important to choose the right mattress.

Insomnia/Apnea

If nothing seems to be helping your morning tiredness, you may have an un-diagnosed sleep disorder such as insomnia or apnea.

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes your breathing to stop periodically in your sleep. It could be caused by too much snoring and allergies. Insomnia, on the other hand, involves having a hard time falling asleep or waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep.

You could see a doctor to help you better diagnose if you have these sleeping disorders and from there you can start managing them.

Blue lights

Are you constantly on your phone or computer just minutes before getting into bed? Then that’s probably the reason why you wake up tired the next day. How you ask? Well, our phones and other electronic screens emit blue light especially after sundown.

Blue light, more than other types of light, suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate your body’s circadian rhythm, which is your sleep-wake cycle. This makes it harder for you to get good-quality sleep, which can leave you feeling tired the next morning.

Noisy environment

If you live near a busy highway, you might think that you have got used used to the noise and can sleep through it. Well, not quite. Usually, when you’re the type of person to sleep even when the TV is on, you only sleep light which can cause a lot of fatigue when you wake up.

Therefore, it’s best to ensure that your bedroom is as silent as possible so as to increase the amount of deep sleep you get each night and decrease the number of times you wake up during the night.
