I hear people talking about their receding hairlines and how they would pay an arm and a leg to bring back their hairlines and help maintain it. As you might have noticed, I am a wig girl. I love my wigs as they help my hair underneath to grow. I am also trying to grow my mane and I totally get it when one of my followers says she’d like tips on protective hairstyles for your hairline. Below are the hairstyles that you too should try out.

  • Box Braids

Box braids are a protective hairstyle that are also long lasting. They can last anywhere between 4 and 6 weeks depending on how well you take care of them.

It is also possible to wash your braids to keep your scalp clean meaning that it is a hairstyle that you can go swimming with comfortably.

Many people dread this hairstyle because of the long installation process but places like Kenyatta and Umoja Market can help you braid them in a few hours.

Just be careful that the braids are not too tight.

  • Knot-less Braids

These are the most recent in-thing when it comes to protective hairstyles that are gentle to your hairline.

They are braided in such a way that the braid is added upon and it gets thicker. They are also very neat and easy to style and thus makes it to our list of protective hairstyles for your hairline.

  • Crotchet hair

There are a myriad of crotchet hairstyles today in the market and they are very friendly to your hairline.

Your hair is first braided in cornrows then a crotchet needle is used to install the synthetic weave in.

This style can last up to 4 weeks and it is all dependent on how well you take care of it. Use leave-in conditioner and a curling gel to keep the curls fresh.

  • Flat twist

These look like cornrows but they are easier to achieve. They can last up to a week or two and you can undo the twist and rock your beautiful twist out afro.

  • Two strand twists

This protective style is specifically suitable for someone that recently transitioned to a naturalista.

They are simple to achieve – Split your hair into sections, apply leave in conditioner and twist from root to tip.

They can be rocked as twists then undone and rocked as a fro.

  • Puff Updo

This style is very common among the natural sister and often rocked on wash day. Some have even made it their signature look.

Simply wet your hair, apply gel on the perimeter and brush it up to a puff. You can tie your hair with a strand and add an extension if your hair is not puffy enough.

  • Braided ponytail or bun

This hairstyle is achieved using synthetic braids like the Abuja or Sista braid. The style can vary in size of the lines or technique used e.g. the stitch technique.

This style can last for up to 4 weeks.

  • Faux locs

This style style is achieved by wrapping Marley Braid or undone fluffy kinky on your hair. It also lasts longer than normal braids.

Be sure they are not tightly done.

  • Wigs

As earlier mentioned, wigs are my everyday go-to. They are my staple protective hairstyle.
