Makeup Tips for Women With Combination Skin Type

Combination skin is exactly what it sounds like—a combination of oily and dry skin. Typically, combination skin feels oily around the T-zone (nose, chin, and forehead) and dry in other areas of the face. Women with combination skin type find that after doing their makeup, during the course of the day, it tends to run or appear sweaty on the T-zone. Trying to achieve a uniform makeup look when you have dry skin on some parts of your face and oily skin on other parts can seem like an uphill battle. You can achieve harmony, though and here’s how:

Use two primers

Because your face is a combination of skin types, you will need to invest in two primers so your makeup lays perfectly on your skin. On your T-zone, where you experience the most oiliness, use a mattifying primer that will absorb all the oil and keep it under control. On the rest of the face, you can use a hydrating primer so that the skin is well moisturized.

Foundation

Buying two different foundations for your face can be expensive so instead, choose a formula that’s best for the majority of your face. If most of your face is dry, choose a moisturizing formula. Apply it generously everywhere on your face except the T-zone. Then, on the T-zone make sure to use apply small amounts of the foundation and blend furiously. This technique will ensure that makeup lays perfectly on combination skin.

Set your T-zone

Once you’re finished with your foundation, set the T-zone with a translucent or tinted powder applied with a brush. This provides a final layer of oil absorption to help keep your look shine-free throughout the day. For the rest of the face, apply light powder using soft strokes across the skin.

If you have a very oily T-zone, blotting papers are excellent for touch-ups on the go—they keep you from caking up your skin with layer after layer of powder.

Create a focal point with your eyes and lips

Sometimes when you have combination skin you may wish to distract from your complexion and draw attention to your eyes and lips instead. If that’s the route you wish to take, you can keep your face makeup super simple and go for a bold lip and eyeshadow.
