We all love a good DIY project especially if it going to save us a few bucks from our expenses. In fact, I know for a fact that not everyone has the money for consistent facials in spas. Not to worry though, if you want to skip out on paying huge bills at facial spas, you can create your own DIY facial steam at your own home! All you will need to do this is probably right in your kitchen this whole time.

By now, you already know the benefits of steaming your face – it releases toxins from your skin, loosens dirt and debris in your pores, and allows the products you apply afterwards to penetrate deeper. And then, if that’s not enough to sell you on it, there’s always the post-steam glow! With that already covered, here is how to do a DIY facial steam at home:

Cleanse your face

Before getting right into the facial steam, it’s important to clean your face of any dirt or makeup you may have on. The steam is only beneficial to your pores and skin if you don’t have makeup and the day’s dirt acting as a barrier. You should use a gentle exfoliator as well if you want maximum results. This ensures the dead skin cells won’t block the effects of the facial steam. (no harsh peels!)

Boil some water

While cleansing your face, bring some water to a boil so that immediately you’re done cleansing, you can steam your face. Once boiled, add dried or fresh herbs to the boiling water. If you are looking to draw toxins and impurities out of your pores, you can add parsley to the water. Alternatively, if your skin is dry or sensitive, try a soothing ingredient like chamomile instead. Reduce the heat, add a cover to your pot, and let the ingredients simmer for about 2.5 minutes. Then, remove the water from heat, add 3-4 drops of your essential oils and transfer mixture to a heat-safe bowl.

Lean over the basin

Lean over the water basin, keeping your face about 12 inches from the water, and drape a towel over your head to create a tent. Sit like this and steam your face for about five to 10 minutes to clear out your pores. Lift the towel if you need to cool off.

Dry and moisturize

After you’ve done your DIY facial steam, pat your skin dry with a towel and finish off your facial by applying the moisturizer of your choice.
