If you are really desperate to lose weight, you have probably read a million articles and watched thousands of videos on weight loss. Trust me — I can relate. Before losing weight, I read and watched everything and anything that had to do with losing weight. And that’s how I heard about peanuts and weight loss. Turns out, peanuts are a great solution for losing and even maintaining weight. You might be thinking — peanuts are known for their high protein and fat content so how can they help you lose weight?

Peanuts keep you fuller for longer

Because peanuts are very high in calories, fibre and proteins, when consumed, you feel full for longer. This is because these three nutrients take long to digest and you, therefore, don’t need to eat a lot. In fact, if you are trying to lose weight but constantly have to deal with hunger pangs, snacking on controlled amounts of peanuts is a good way to keep your portion in control.

Lower calorie intake

Though peanuts are high in calories, you may not absorb all the calories they provide. When you eat peanuts, your teeth cannot break them down into a small enough size for full digestion, meaning you’re likely absorbing fewer calories while the rest is excreted through waste.

Which peanuts to choose

It’s always best to select unflavored peanuts that have undergone minimal processing and don’t contain any added salt or other ingredients. Avoid candied peanuts, which contain a sugar coating and provide additional calories. For extra fibre and antioxidants, enjoy peanuts with the skins on. The extra fibre can help increase fullness.

What to consider

While peanuts are a great, healthy snack, some people have been found to be severely allergic to proteins contained in them. So make sure that you are not allergic to them before binging on them.

Even though peanuts have been proven to aid in weight loss and maintenance, remember to keep everything in moderation. It is, therefore, sensible to eat them in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Consuming too many calories may actually lead to weight gain and we don’t want that, do we?
