If you experience painful cramps when your period comes knocking on the door, you have probably tried everything from using heat therapy to painkillers. If you are now looking for a natural way with fewer side effects and is guaranteed to work in relieving you of painful period cramps, then herbal teas are a great option. Willing to give herbal teas a try? Pour yourself a cup of tea using these loose leaf teas or a couple tea bags and toast to less pain:

Ginger Tea

Ginger is known for its inflammatory and because of this, it can help with painful period cramps. In fact, research has found that ginger was just as effective as ibuprofen when it came to relieving menstrual pain. Not only does this herbal tea help with period cramps, but it also helps to relieve some other issues that accompany your period such as nausea, sickness and stomach upset. From home, you can make your own ginger tea by steeping some fresh ginger in hot water, adding in a drizzle of honey or a slice of lemon for some extra flavour. You can also increase your intake of ginger by putting it in soups or smoothies.

Chamomile Tea

Research shows that chamomile contains two major compounds (hippurate and glycine) which can help to relieve muscle spasms, as well as working to relax the uterus. Like ginger, chamomile also has anti-inflammatory properties which may help to reduce period cramps further. Make yourself a cup of this herbal tea before bedtime and before going about your day’s errands but make sure not to take too much of it. Chamomile tea can have mild to severe side effects including hypersensitivity and vomiting if taken in large quantities.

Peppermint Tea

This is yet another herbal tea that many women swear by in relieving period cramps. Why? Because peppermint tea contains a powerful ingredient – menthol – that is effective for easing bloating, cramps and fatigue. Additionally, due to its anti-spasmodic properties, peppermint tea helps to treat the muscles in the walls of the uterus and ease pain. Drink 1 cup of peppermint tea 2-3 times a day before and during days of your menstruation and you can expect to experience a major improvement in your mood and cramps.

Green Tea

Green tea is a known natural diuretic that can help decrease water retention and alleviate period symptoms including bloating and cramps. The tea contains powerful catechins that help to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation to soothe the pain. One thing to remember though when using green tea is that the caffeine in this tea might increase the risk of bleeding. Therefore, don’t drink green tea if you have a bleeding disorder.
