More often than not, we are so concerned about the skin on our face that we forget that we have skin on our feet. Normally, when women talk about their skincare routines, they only talk about their faces. But, the skin on other parts of our bodies is also as important. Which brings me to a not so spoken about topic. Darker Feet. 6 in 10 African women experience having darker feet than the rest of their bodies. So what could be the reason behind this and what can be done to fix this issue?

Some causes of dark feet

Before getting into fixing this issue of darker feet than the rest of your body, it’s important to know the causes. This will make it easier to get the right fix for the specific cause.

Pregnancy

Falling pregnant is one of the most beautiful things that can happen to any woman. But even this condition that seems like such a blessing comes with so many downsides. One such downside is what is called Melasma. This condition occurs in various parts of the body and sometimes the feet. Melasma in pregnant women is caused by your body making extra melanin, the tanning pigment, which protects your skin against ultraviolet (UV) light

Ageing

After some time, and as we get older, the skin stops to naturally exfoliate itself. Therefore, when you don’t manually exfoliate it, a lot of dead skin piles up and this can cause your feet to look darker than the rest of your body.

Sunburns

When you continually expose your feet to direct sun, they can end up being darker than the rest of your body. This is because when the skin is exposed to the sun, it makes more melanin to protect the skin’s lower layers from damage. Wearing sandals and shoes that are open on the top side can expose your skin to the harsh UV rays of the sun and cause darkening.

Remedies of darker feet than the rest of your body

Exfoliate

The same energy you place into following a strict skincare routine should also be used on your feet. Occasionally exfoliating the skin on your feet will gradually remove all the dead skin and eventually brighten up your feet.

Wear closed shoes

If possible, always choose to wear closed shoes especially when the sun is out and the heat is crazy. This will prevent any sunburns occurring on your feet which then causes darkening of your feet.

Wear sunscreen

When the sun is out and shining and your choice of shoes is sandals, ensure that you gloss your feet up with sunscreen. Remember that the skin on your feet is just as sensitive as the skin on your face.

Lemon mask

Because lemon juice has brightening properties, you can mask your feet daily with lemon juice before going to bed. After about 20 minutes, wash your feet, moisturize them and wear socks to bed to keep them moisturized.

    Hi, what about the opposite? My face is darker than the rest of my body….no matter what i do…sunblock, sunscreen, my face always darkens!!! it is sooo annoying….any tips? Thanks
