When someone decides to go natural with their hair, aka the name naturalista, we think they are taking the easy way out in terms of hair care and products.
However, despite popular belief, natural hair upkeep is quite demanding. You have no idea!
There was a time back when going natural was the in thing. So many women hopped into that bandwagon, only to backslide halfway through it.
Reason? Natural hair, whether its the normal Afro or dreadlocks, demands effort, dedication and money.
If you are a naturalista or thinking about transitioning to one, here is a checklist of hair products you should have for healthy and beautiful hair.
Sulfate Free Shampoos
Every naturalista should have a sulfate-free shampoo in her collection of hair products.
This is because normal shampoos tend to have sulfates in them which strip the hair of all its oils.
Even though shampoos help to prevent product and dirt build-up, it is not a must to use them regularly as they can leave hair dry and damaged.
A good deep condition is a must have hair product for every naturalista because it strengthens hair follicles and improve hair texture.
Deep conditioning treatments help reduce hair breakage especially with all the manipulation and styling that is done on hair.
It’s actually recommended to deep condition your hair once every week.
When purchasing a deep conditioner, be sure to get one depending on what your hair needs at the time. However, the deep conditioner is most recommended because it helps moisturizing hair and has a lot of slip to help with detangling.
Leave in Treatments
After shampooing and deep conditioning your hair, a good leave-in treatment is good for your natural hair, once in a while.
This hair product works best when applied on damp hair to provide extra moisture and help with detangling hair.
Some leave-ins even do as much as detangling and defining your curls while leaving it soft and shiny. So, If you a naturalista, you definitely need a leave-in hair product to make your hair easier to manage.
For most naturalistas, their hair is kinky or curly. Therefore, a good moisturizer is a must-have hair product.
When buying moisturizers, go for any water-based product that will help restore hydration in your hair. So, make sure that the key ingredient in any moisturizer you buy is water.
Oils are an essential hair product for every naturalista out there. This is because they help retain and seal in moisture added to your hair from other products.
Additionally, some oils such as the Jamaican black castor oil and coconut oil help to boost hair growth.
Hair oils will also come in handy when doing scalp massages and hot oil treatments.
When using oils on your hair, make sure your hair is moisturized beforehand.
