I was raised Catholic and Easter has all always been a significant time for me and my family to commemorate Christ’s sacrifice for us in his death and resurrection.  As a family, we usually celebrate the 3 day Easter break Kenyan style with our friends or family over nyama choma and some drinks.

Sadly this year it doesn’t look like that’s going to be a plan. We are stuck in our houses with our immediate family and with the current travel restrictions, that get together with our grandparents and extended family is nowhere in sight.

But we shouldn’t let this spoil any Easter traditions we have had instead, we should use this time to start new traditions from the comfort of our own homes and celebrate the Easter weekend in style.

Below are 5 top ways you can celebrate this Easter weekend with your loved ones without leaving your home.

1.Take time to cook and eat together

Comfort food anyone? This weekend I plan to throw away all my fitness goals and cuddle with some warm comfort food. I am also planning to bring everyone together to cook this weekend. The men will be in charge of the barbeque station while the girls prepare the rest of the food.

On that note, I have been looking up various barbeque recipes for us to try and I came across a guy called Mulunda, a food and bar consultant who makes some of the most delicious looking food I have ever seen. Check him out on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/mulunda/

I have gathered so many ideas from him on things I can barbeque besides the good old nyama choma.

I wish I could download food from the internet.

Here are a few examples he shares of other things you can grill:

  1. Bone In Rib Eye I Chilli Pineanpple Jumbo Prawns I Lemon Asparagus I Cajun Bruseels Sprouts I Spicy Pickled Red Cabbage

2. BBQ Chicken –Dry Rub: Smoked Paprika, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Lemon Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Brown Sugar, Coffee and Rosemary Salt

3. Teriyaki Glazed Salmon

4. Katsu Pork Chop

5. Pan Seared Parrot Fish I Rosemary and Mustard Infused, White Wine Beurre Blanc I Chimichurri I Toasted Almond Flakes and Black Herring Caviar

2. Watch a Movie together

If you are into something more chilled, you can plan to watch the same film with your family and friends even if they are not in the same house.

Apps such as Netflix Party allow you to watch Netflix Films together virtually. You only need to download the extension on Google Chrome, then invite your loved ones to watch a film and you’re good to go.

You can also talk via a chatbox while the film is showing allowing you to discuss and share your thoughts which is a very great way to stay connected to your friends and family.

3. Create a playlist to listen to music together

My taste in music ranges from “You’ve gotta listen to this” to “I know, please don’t judge me” but luckily my teenagers are around this weekend. for the rescue.

To really feel like you’re sitting down to have lunch with your loved ones during this quarantine period, why not create a playlist for everyone to listen to at the same time?

You can easily create a playlist on Apple Music/ Spotify, and then share this with your family and friends so you can all listen together while you’re cooking or having lunch.

4. Host an Easter quiz night

With video call applications such as Whatsapp, Facetime and Zoom, you could put together a quiz for the family this weekend.

You can have it themed around Easter or any other topics and this is definitely going to be a really fun way to connect.

5. Play online games

Usually after family gatherings, we often turn to playing a game and although this time we won’t be able to sit down and play a board game together for instance, there are lots of virtual game apps that allow you to still enjoy fun and games with your loved ones.

Examples are: Kahoot which is a virtual quiz suitable for the whole family, or Mario Kart Tour for a competitive game and the online Version of Cards against Humanity for a more adult game.

And there you have it guys, 5 ways to make sure that you enjoy the Easter Weekend in Lockdown. Let me know in the comments which of these 5 you will be trying.

Happy Easter!
