Apply Lipstick Like a Pro

Apply Lipstick Like a Pro

They say that the day a girl learns how to apply lipstick is the day she turns into a woman. And I couldn’t agree more!

However, even though lipstick has been here for a long time, most women still don’t know how to apply lipstick.

Lipstick is one of those essential makeup products that can build or break your whole look. If you don’t apply it well, you could end up looking like a hot mess!

So, with that, here are some tricks to apply your lipstick and keep it place all day—no smearing, blurring, fading, feathering, or cracking like a pro.

Exfoliate your lips

The first thing you should do before putting on lipstick on your lips should be to exfoliate. You can do this easily at home by using a clean toothbrush dipped in olive oil and gently scrub the lips.

Alternatively, you can use lip scrubs and moisturizers such as those from Mac.

This gives your lips a smooth and seamless base for applying the lipstick. Otherwise you could end up with a flaky, caked-on finish.

Moisturize your lips

After exfoliating, it is essential that you moisturize you lips before putting on lipstick.

So how do you moisturize? You do this using a gloss or gel (like arimis) to prevent lips from drying when you apply matte lipstick.

After moisturizing, make sure to blot off the excess gloss from your lips. The oils in the balm create a slippery base for lipstick, meaning your shade is more likely to feather and smear.

Use Concealer

If you have very dark lips like I do and want to try sheer light pink lipsticks, make concealer your best friend.

The key is to use a shade that matches your skin tone. The idea is to neutralize pigmented lips entirely, creating a clean canvas for colour.

After you have finished putting on lipstick, achieve a crisp cupid’s bow and super-defined corners by using concealer.

Line your lips

Using a lip pencil, ensure that you always line your lips before putting on lipstick.

Lip liner is to lipstick what primer is to foundation or a base coat is to nail polish—it’s not crucial, but it does make your lipstick look better and last longer.

Remember to use neutral colours of lip liners or those closer to the lipstick shade you are wearing. But, don’t use very dark liners on your lips.

Choose the right lipstick

If you have very dry lips as I do, it’s best to stay away from matte lipsticks because they cause your lips to dry even more and crack. That’s why I choose rich, long-lasting and non-matte lipsticks.

Over the years, I have realized that the lipsticks that work best for me include Mac in the shades of Russian Red, Rebel, Diva, Heroine and Flat out fabulous, Clinique in the shades of Bold Pop 08, Black Licorice Pop 08 and Laura Mercier.

For normal lips, you can try long lasting lipsticks that are matte. Once you apply these lipsticks, they stay put for hours.

Keep lipstick off your teeth

There’s a genius trick to avoiding lipstick on your teeth and you’ll want to do it every time.

After applying lipstick, simply pop your index finger into your mouth, then pull it out. The excess lipstick will come off on your finger rather than your teeth.

Use tissue to blot

When you use lipsticks that re not matte, it is essential to blot after applying lipstick.

Apply your first coat of lipstick, blot with a tissue, and add a second layer of colour. The intermediate trick helps lock down the lip colour and mattify the shade.
