9 Supplements I Cannot Live Without And Why I Take Them

10 years ago the word ‘supplements’ was nowhere near my vocabulary. And if you would have told me that I would be talking about them so passionately as I am today I would have thought you are crazy.

In my early 20’s the older women including our mom’s would always make resounding comments about aging. Saying that our bodies will degenerate as we get older. But let’s face it, when the mirror in front of you tells you that you are nothing short of perfect, with that fantastic metabolism, figure 8 and small tummy, the last thing you can think about as a 20 year old is aging. Or that your body will need all the support it needs once you clock some years.

So I welcome you to my 30’s where supplements have become part of my lifestyle. For both beauty and health reasons.

Like everything else, our body wears out after being used for a long time which can sometimes result in a depletion of certain minerals and vitamins. And that’s where supplements come in.

A quick disclaimer before we dive in is that the best source of minerals and vitamins is from natural sources such as food.

I heard something very profound the other day that said, cows give us milk which is full of calcium. But what we forget is that cows get their calcium from greens. In a nutshell, you don’t have to drink milk to get calcium, you can directly eat greens just like cows in the form of kale, cabbage and other leafy vegetables.

…….

My journey with supplements began after undergoing my bariatric surgery. Below are all the supplements I currently take, some daily and others every other day.

9 Supplements I Currently Take

  1. Iron

Since my surgery, my iron levels dropped. I take iron supplements once in a while, but I am not the biggest fan of them because of their taste. And after some time you get tired of taking them.

I struggle with my meat intake which would really aid in boosting my iron, but since I don’t consume much, I have to take the iron supplements.

  1. Collagen

Collagen is great for the elasticity of your skin. I take my supplements in tablets and sometimes peptides which I put in my smoothies. Collagen creates supple skin, strengthens nails,  helps your joints, gut health and hair growth.

As you grow older you have loose skin and cellulite and collagen helps to firm things up.

  1.  Magnesium

I take magnesium for muscle relaxation especially after working out when your muscles feel a bit sore.

Magnesium is also good with reducing inflammation and insomnia. Usually I will add the powder to my smoothies whenever I don’t have the tablets.

  1. Calcium

I don’t take milk and taking calcium supplements ensures that my bone health is great. Women are more prone to osteopetrosis and I take calcium supplements to ensure that my bones do not fracture easily especially at the gym.

  1. Melatonin

It’s supposed to help you sleep. Sometimes it works and other days it doesn’t. But I keep it for those days I really need it.

  1. Milk Thistle

It helps to clean your liver and I usually take in my smoothies with a mixture of water, lemon and grapefruit.

  1. Centrum Multivitamin

This is a great supplement that helps with our overall immunity and helps you avoid catching colds.

  1. Women Multivitamin

Helps with stabilizing hormones. I take this especially during my period.

  1. Acidophilus

Helps with stomach upsets and provides good bacteria for the gut reducing constipation and other related digestive issues.

And there you have it, a bunch of supplements I am constantly reaching for on a regular basis.

What do you think about supplements and which ones do you take? Feel free to share with me in the comments below.

Till the next one.
