Pimples, also known as acne, occur when the oily glands on your skin are overactive and the pores become inflamed. Pimples can occur anywhere but they are more rampant on the face. Pimples are often triggered by the androgen hormones and in some cases genetics and so there is not sure way of preventing pimples. Below are tips that will help you avoid getting pimples on your face by reducing their severity and keeping them in check.
- Wash your face properly
To help prevent pimples, ensure that you remove excess dirt, oil and sweat from your face. Do not over-wash your face though, two times a day are okay. Avoid harsh cleansers that dry your face. Invest in alcohol-free cleansers.
How to wash your face
- Wet your face with warm or cold water – not hot
- Apply your mild cleanser in a circular motion using your fingers as opposed to a washcloth
- Rinse thoroughly and pat with a clean dry towel
- Know your skin type
You need to figure out if your skin is dry, oily or a combination of the two. Oily skin is more prone to pimples. Knowing your skin type will help you chose the right products to clean and apply on your face.
- Moisturize your face
Keep your face moisturized as moisturizers hydrate your face. Beware of moisturizers that are scented, oily and contain ingredients that may irritate the skin and cause pimples.
Go for moisturizers that are fragrance-free and noncomedogenic after washing your face or when your skin feels dry.
- Stay hydrated
Ever heard “Drink water and mind your own business”? Yeah, it helps with your skin, a lot.
Dehydration causes your skin to produce more oil from the glands and it also promotes inflammation. Always ensure to take 8 glasses of water or more especially when you are pregnant, exercising or breastfeeding or if you spend a considerable amount of time in a hot and humid environment.
- Go slow on make-up
I know it is tempting to use make up to cover up or conceal pimples but this will clog pores and trigger a worse breakout.
Go natural when you can. If you must wear make up, use light foundation that is non-greasy and fragrance free.
- Avoid touching your face
Your hands come in contact with a lot of germs and bacteria and touching your face will transfer the same and cause breakouts. Not to say that you cannot scratch your nose if it itches but make sure to wash your hands often.
- Do not be a pimple-popper
Popping pimples may cause bleeding, severe scarring or infections. Do not bow to that urge to squeeze that pimple
- Reduce stress
Your skin knows when you are stressing out and in as much as it will not cause pimples directly, it will worsen them. When you are stressed, signal is sent to the oil glands in your skin to produce oil-stimulating hormones.
