In addition to worsening your body’s regulation of insulin, refined sugars also promote inflammation and oxidative stress.

Multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain function and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression.

So which foods should we eat?

For overall health and good brain function, nutritionists say that we should maintain a balanced diet.

If you can, eat whole foods and avoid packaged or processed foods, which are high in unwanted food additives and preservatives that disrupt the healthy bacteria in the gut.

Consider increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. These will increase your fiber intake.

Probiotic rich foods such as plain yogurt without added sugars are also a plus.

With meats, eat a balance of seafoods and lean poultry and fewer red meats each week.
