I don’t mean to speak for every single person when I say this, but Valentine’s day has got to be one of the hardest days in a single person’s life. There’s something different about Valentine’s day that makes most single people feel the loneliest they’ve ever been. It’s like everywhere you turn, all you see are romantic comedies, romantic getaway adverts, flowers on social media, colleagues and friends sharing their plans for Valentine’s day — the list is endless. It seems like you just can’t catch a break from Valentine’s day fever! And if you aren’t careful, your loneliness can lead you into desperation and depression. But Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to drag you on a dark path. Instead, you can use the day as an opportunity to show love to yourself and others around you. Here are 5 tips you can use to survive this Valentine’s day if you are single, either by choice or circumstance.
Purpose to avoid social media
By all means, my single people, please avoid social media on the weekend of this Valentine’s day. Social media will be littered with pictures and videos of your friends on romantic dates, getaways and gifts. We all know social media can sometimes bring up a case of FOMO or envy so keep your phone away on this day because this might depress you even more than you already are. Ignorance is sometimes bliss and that’s certainly the case when it comes to Valentine’s Day—you don’t need to be reminded of how happy couples are claiming to be.
Keep yourself busy
Other than keeping off social media, distracting yourself is another idea to survive this Valentine’s Day. Find a task that you know will keep you busy and occupied all day. It could be reorganizing your wardrobe or cleaning your house. Whether it’s your room, apartment, or house; some cleaning can help you to feel better. Feeling better equals less negative thought; which results in a happier day!
Spend time with a friend or family
While other coupled-up people will be spending time with their lovers, now’s your chance to spend time with your single friend or even family. Go out on a date with your single friends or even better, organize a party for all your single friends. Spending time with other amazing single friends will remind you that having loving and supportive friends is just as good!
If there was ever a day you could get away with your guilty pleasures, then Valentine’s Day would be that day. You could, for example, order yourself a pizza and indulge. Alone with pizza is better than alone alone. Also, I mean, that’s a whole. entire. pizza that you don’t have to share with anyone but you, yourself, and you!
I don’t know about you, but with these tips, this Valentine’s Day is starting to look a lot better than most of you imagined. In fact, if you really focus on yourself this time around, you’re probably going to have a better time than those in relationships.
