Easy Steps to Finally Decluttering Your Wardrobe

Decluttering your wardrobe is the first step to truly transforming your image. Often times, as we women, we complain that we don’t have anything to wear, whereas we have a closet full of clothes. Why? Because most times when we buy clothes, we don’t need them or just by out of excitement at the moment.

When you take a look at your wardrobe, do you feel in control or out of control? Are your drawers bursting at the seams? Are shoes heaped on the floor, or hangers weighed down with multiple items? A disorganised wardrobe causes stress and anxiety and can be very overwhelming. That’s why to achieve this decluttering exercise, you have to break it down into steps.

For this very first step, ensure that your bed or floor is clear because you will take everything out of your wardrobe and throw it in a pile on the bed or floor.

In this step of decluttering your wardrobe, you will go through the pile of clothes and pile them into three categories: keep, give away and maybe.

Any piece of clothing that you hold up and think ‘yes, I love it!’ goes into the keep category. Anything that you hesitate about or are unsure should go into the maybe pile. The obvious no’s such as too big, never wear them or worn out should go into the giveaway pile.

Truly aim to get rid of half your clothes. I mean it!

Remember the maybe pile that we weren’t quite sure of? Stand in front of a mirror and try everything on. What’s your very first thought when you see yourself? If you love it, keep. But if you hate how it looks, throw it in the give away pile. A great tip to really deciding on clothes that you’re unsure of is instead of asking ‘how does this make me LOOK?’ ask yourself ‘how does this make me FEEL?’

Be brutal with your socks, underwear, and bras. They do have a shelf life, you know. You’re not doing yourself any favours by keeping ones that are stretched out and frumpy. Use this as an excuse to treat yourself to ones that make you look (and feel) amazing!

In this decluttering your wardrobe step, as you hold up each pair, ask yourself:

  • do you still wear them?
  • do they fit? Do they feel good?
  • do they work with your (newly decluttered) wardrobe?
  • are they in great condition?
  • are they in style?

In this final step, all you now have to do is organize your new wardrobe! For a more organized wardrobe, you could try arranging your clothes in terms of types: t-shirts, dresses, jeans etc. Organizing in terms of colours and patterns is another great way of having an organized wardrobe.

I am excited to try this tips! To be honest, I am quite nervous actually….but determined to do this. The first thought that crossed my mind when I looked at the picture on this post was…”well that definitely isn’t me or my issue” 😅 and left the page. I have come back hours later because….maybe your tips could have help for me….🤪
I am a neat, well organized hoarder….there I have said it out loud😫 and my greatest issue right now is letting go of my clothes. They held me up and together and covered my pain and shame when I lost everything and failed so many times… for me decluttering is letting go of that season. I think I am just scared that I will let go and then not have them when I need them😭 Martha where is your faith? I have asked myself this question like 10times in the last hour. There is alot of emotional stuff involved in this process so…..Thank you for the tips and the space to pour my heart out. It felt freeing to say this here!
