It’s true what they say. We are what we eat. And although minding your diet is easier said than done, it always helps to have a little reminder that there are certain foods that can age your skin.

I’m sure you have a few foods in mind. But remember, every person is unique. You have to find what specifically works for your skin and what doesn’t.

Here is a list of foods that age your skin according to nutritionists:

Grilled meat

Nyama Choma is a favourite amongst us Kenyans. But according to dermatologists and nutritionists, it is a major cause of skin ageing.

Black chars on grilled meat contain pro-inflammatory hydrocarbons, which could cause the collagen of your skin to be damaged.

You don’t necessarily need to avoid barbecuing, but, in any case, you should make sure you scrape off the black chars and clean the grill when you’re finished.

White Sugar

A lot of us struggle with quitting sugar because it is such a huge part of most of the foods that we eat, from bread, cakes etc. However, sugar is one of the famous causes of unwanted skin concerns such as acne.

Additionally, when sugar combines with proteins in our bodies, it contributes to the formation of collagen damaging culprits.

This is sped up even more if sunlight is involved.

White wine

So many of you are probably frowning at this because you depend on a glass of white to relax after a hard day of work. I do too.

For one, white wine can damage your enamel and stain your teeth. Moreover, alcohol, in general, depletes your nutrients, hydration, and vitamin A levels, all of which have a direct impact on wrinkles.

Red meat

Red meat is another food that makes your skin age by affecting the way your skin produces collagen, the substance that makes your skin look young.

When you eat a lot of red meat, your body produces free radicals that affect the ability of the skin to protect itself and generate collagen.

Coffee/Tea

Both tea and coffee are culprits of ageing skin because of their main ingredient: caffeine.

Caffeine is like any other diuretic; it makes you excrete fluid, and deplete your body of moisture. Anything dehydrating can dehydrate your skin, making it look dull and aged.

On top of dehydrating your body, caffeine damages your teeth and affects your mood.

Processed meat

Processed meats such as sausages and bacon have sulfites and other preservatives, which can trigger inflammation in the skin, and accelerate the appearance of ageing.

These foods also contain large amounts of salt, which is another culprit of making your skin age.
