Times are tough and budgets have become tighter. Things are thick and it breaks my heart to see just home much people’s livelihoods have been negatively affected. At this point, It is all about cautioning ourselves and our families from further economic and thus the need to adopt smart shopping tips. This is not the time to be splurging on unnecessary items or throwing caution to the wind. Here are some tips that we have used as a large family to ensure that the effects of the pandemic bite harder.
- Make a shopping list and stick to it
Let’s start simple – make a shopping list. Write down everything you need for say the week or month. Be extensive and write everything. Do not assume that you will remember some things. Also, if it is not on the list, do not get it.
- Make a realistic budget
Yeah, we understand that finances may be quite tight at the moment but do not limit yourself too much. If you still can, get the basics even if it means getting brands that are cheaper. Ensure that your budget is effective.
- Use cash as opposed to plastic
Studies show that when using a credit or debit card, you tend to spend 50% more. We do not want this to happen so use cash so that you can account for every coin you use. Also, if your budget is at Ksh 10,000 for groceries to last the month, carry with you this exact amount of money. This ensures that you do not spend more and you get to purchase the necessities planned for.
- Always compare the prices
The good thing with supermarkets and grocery stores is that similar or substitute products are shelved in the same isles. When getting rice for instance, all the brands are in one isle and you can get to price compare. When you are on a tight budget, get the most affordable brand as it will serve the same purpose anyway – Do not be rigid.
- Do your research before you go shopping
Check out for other options and their prices, look out for reviews on website and ask friends and family where they have gotten better deals and bargains in the past. I know women who are in “Food chamas” where they contribute and go shopping in wholesale shops in Eastleigh and Kamukunji. This cuts down on cost as they buy in bulk.
- Use coupons and promo codes
We are cutting down on costs and the use of vouchers and special codes to get a discount in an important way to do that. If you need to get bedding for example, you can use my Promo Code StepM12 to get 12% off on all purchases you make from LilySilk. This will save you money that you can channel to other expenses.
- Avoid impulse buying
Do not need it, DO NOT GET IT. Period!
- Do not go with trends
Purchasing a smart phone that has just been released into the market will cost you a lot more than waiting for it to be around for a few months. You will get the same product anyways.
These are some of the tips for smart shopping to help you save money. How are you saving money during this tough time?
