Our self-image is the personal viewpoint that we adopt towards ourselves and it describes such characteristics as intelligence, attractiveness, talents, and kindness among other traits.
So you ask, what’s in a self-image?
Very simply put, self-image is how you see yourself both internally and externally. The concept of self-image is important because it not only affects how we see ourselves but also how we relate with the people around us and how we perceive our surroundings. Self-image has a deep influence in all aspects of our lives.
A positive self-image can improve our physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being. A negative self-image on the other hand can decrease our wellbeing in each of the above areas which then affects our overall functioning and life satisfaction.
Difference between self-image and self-concept
It is understandable that at times, people might tend to confuse self-image and self-concept. The difference between the two is that self-concept entails how you see, feel, and think about yourself. This makes it a broader term while self-image is a part of self-concept in that it is strictly how we view ourselves.
Difference between self-image and self-identity
Self-identity is also broader than self-image in the sense that self-identity encapsulates who we believe we are and how we would describe ourselves to other people.
As human beings, we can have both positive and negative self-image.
A negative self-image is when you have a poor view of yourself.
If you constantly view yourself as unintelligent, unhappy, unattractive, or undesirable, then you have a negative self-image.
You know that ideal version of yourself that you have in your mind and then realizing that you are falling short of the same? That is where most of the negative self-image views stem from. When you look in the mirror and so not like what you see or even at times hate that reflection, that may cultivate a negative self-image.
With a negative self-image, we tend to focus much more greatly on our flaws and weaknesses; we are less accepting of them, and we distort these imperfections as well as our failures.
A low or negative self-image can lead to such illnesses as depression.
When we have a positive self-image, we recognize our assets, qualities, and overall potential. This positive image also allows us to be accepting of our flaws and weaknesses while working towards changing these flaws and limitations to positives.
When you view yourself as attractive, desirable, intelligent, or happy then you are embodying a positive self-image.
