How Often You Should See a Gynaecologist and Why

A lot of women admit to not regularly seeing a gynaecologist unless they experience issues arising related to their vaginal health.

And even when some women have problems with their vaginas, they would rather stay silent and not visit a gynaecologist.

In this day and age, a lot of women still find it awkward, intimate and embarrassing to visit a gynaecologist.

Gynaecologists have seen it all. So you going to see one and them examining your vagina is just another day at the office. So, there’s no need to feel embarrassed or anxious.

How Often?

The number of times you visit your gynaecologist depends on two things: your age and your health.

For women who fall within the ages between 21 and 29, it is recommended that you visit your gynaecologist once every year as well as in-between for any issues that arise.

Young women under the age of 21 who are not sexually active also can typically see a gynaecologist every other year.

The ideal time for parents to make the first appointment for their teenage daughter should be around the age of 16.

If you are pregnant, seeing a gynaecologist majorly depends on what you decide together with your doctor.

In fact, it’s recommended that on every prenatal visit, you should see a gynaecologist as well.

Why See a Gynaecologist?

A visit to the gynaecologist is recommended for one major reason. To conduct a pelvic exam.

A pelvic exam is conducted to examine woman’s reproductive organs, including the vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes, vulva, ovaries, and uterus. This kind of screening helps in find possible signs of ovarian cysts, sexually transmitted infections, uterine fibroids or early-stage cancers.

Gynaecologists also help with issues relating to family planning, including contraception, sterilization, and pregnancy termination.
