Knowing your body shape can save you from a lot of fashion mishaps or falling victim to fashion trends that don’t do you any good.

Have you ever bought a dress or an outfit but it didn’t look as good on you as it did on the models used to market?

If the answer is yes, you are not alone. Thousands of women have been in a similar situation.

The reason behind this solely lies in the fact that they don’t know their body shape.

We all want to have that hourglass shape that most models seem to have. I do too. However, we can’t all look the same and that’s what makes each one of us unique.

The reason why you need to know your body shape is that you can create your own style instead of being sucked into trends.

Different Body Types

Different stylists have tried to explain the different body shapes women have, the most common being using fruits.

However, in our case, we will use geometric shapes to describe the different body shapes women have.

As a reputable image consultant, I have narrowed women’s body shapes into 6 categories: Triangle, Inverted Triangle, Hourglass, Rectangle and Round body shapes.

Triangle

Having a triangle body shape means that your hips are the widest part of your body.

Triangle Shaped Body

Your shoulders, bust and waist tend to be more narrow and smaller compared to your hips.

Inverted Triangle

Women with this body type tend to have broader shoulders and large cup sizes as compared to their hips and waist.

Hourglass

This is one of the most coveted body types by women and has been considered the fashion standard for models.

Hourglass

Women who fall under this category have a more narrow waist as compared to their hips and bust area.

Their hips and bust measurements are usually of equal size.

Rectangle

With this type of body, your weight is usually evenly distributed throughout your body.

Rectangle

This means that your shoulders and hips are equal in measurements while your waist measures about 9 inches less than your shoulders.

This body shape is also referred to as an athletic body type.

Round Shape

Round shaped women usually have no waist definition. Therefore, their bust, waist and hips tend to have almost similar measurements.

Women who fall under this category find that their weight usually tends to settle in the midriff.

How to Know your Body Shape

Determining your body type and shape means you have to take your body measurements.

For the best and most accurate measurements, you can ask someone to help you take down the measurements.

All you need is a tape measure, a sheet of paper and a pen to record the measurements.

Bust

When measuring your bust, run the tape under your arms and around the widest part of your bust.

Waist

Your natural waist is usually right above your belly button and between your ribcage.

Hips

Run the tape measure from the widest part of your buttocks to the front.

Tip: When taking body measurements, you should take it firmly not tight, this will help to attain accurate measurements.

After recording your measurements you can now find your body type by comparing your measurements with the body types we discussed.
