We all love a Do It Yourself (DIY) home remedy especially if it’s going to kick off some expenses off our budgets.

If there was ever a time to cut back on expenses and bring out your DIY prowess, now is the time.

Times are hard. People are losing jobs. Others have been slapped with pay cuts. So, naturally, most of us are living on a budget.

If you simply can’t afford to buy your favourite face mask at the moment, no need to fret. These home-made face masks will make your skin glow and look its best without having to break your bank.

In fact, some of these DIY face masks have helped me achieve almost the same results, if not better than those expensive masks sold in beauty shops.

Different women use face masks for different reasons.

In my case, I use face masks for the simple reason of relaxation after a long day at work or running errands.

However, if you are looking brighten up your skin, or get rid of acne all you need is to use ingredients that can be easily found in your kitchen.

For Dry Skin

Dry skin is the absolute worst! Seriously. It makes you look way older than you are and has a bad look altogether.

Trying to cover it up with makeup is even worse. If you have, you understand why: It literally doesn’t sit well.

The first thing you need to do for dry skin is exfoliating. Dry skin tends to peel so, let’s explore some exfoliating mask options.

What you need:

  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil

Combine the sugar and olive oil in a bowl and mix thoroughly.

Olive oil can be found in most local supermarkets in Kenya such as Carrefour, Game, Tuskys etc.

You can also add an essential oil like lavender or rosemary that promote relaxation. Health U has amazing varieties of essential oils

Application:

Gently rub the scrub into your skin, and then wash it off. Lastly, use a soothing moisturizer to lock in the benefits of freshly exfoliated skin.

For Skin Brightening

Note here I used the word brightening and not lightening. Those are two completely different things.

Brightening skin simply means restoring vibrancy to the skin. It basically means the removal of dark spots from scarring, acne, sun exposure, etc.

What you need:

  • 1 tbsp of natural, plain yoghurt.
  • 1 tbsp of honey.
  • 1 tbsp of turmeric powder.

Once mixed, apply the mixture evenly on your face while avoiding your eyes.

Leave the mixture on for about 20 minutes then rinse off with warm water and a cloth.

Use a moisturizer of your preference.

For Acne Prone Skin

Acne can be a bit tricky to fight off and you have probably tried all creams in the world. But if you want to take a break from the treatments and are looking for something a little more natural to try, give this DIY face mask a try.

  • 1 tbsp of honey.
  • 1 tbsp of turmeric powder.
  • 1/2 tbsp of Dead Sea salt.

This combination helps reduce infections, irritation, swelling and excess sebum which can block pores and leads to spots and blackheads.

For Oily Skin

What you need:

  • 1/2 an avocado.
  • ¼ cucumber, blended.

This combination is awesome because it leaves your skin feeling clean, fresh and cooled.

Avocado helps in regulating how your skin produces oil while the cucumber hydrates the skin.

Tip

When your face mask has dried and it’s time to come off, simply place a warm, wet washcloth over your face and hold it onto your skin for a few seconds. Repeat this a few times to help loosen up and dissolve the face mask from your skin. This tip will make the rinsing off process much easier and gentler for your skin.
